While many may be turning their attention to national issues on November 3, we have an opportunity to make a lasting impact on our natural lands and waterways close to home.

In November, Michigan voters will be given a historic opportunity to give the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund more discretion as long as at least 25% apiece is spent on land acquisition and park development, splitting the other 50% as needed.

If passed it will also put a mechanism in place to lift the $500 million cap that was reached in 2011.

What it means:
  • This amendment will ensure all future royalties are dedicated to conservation and recreation – removing the cap for good.
  • Allow the flexibility needed to fund and update trails, playgrounds, accessible boat launches, and more in communities across the state, while continuing to prioritize land conservation and protection.
  • Safeguard a stream of conservation and recreation funding granted to our communities every year, while putting enough aside to save for future generations.
  • Ensure a funding stream dedicated to improving the cherished outdoor places Michiganders use to support our mental and physical health – especially during these challenging times.

As conservation professionals, we understand the importance of Michigan’s public lands more than anyone. That’s why Heart of the Lakes has joined a broad, bipartisan coalition to educate Michiganders and encourage them to vote YES on this opportunity to make a lasting impact on our natural lands and waterways close to home.

Heart of the Lakes endorses Prop 1 and urges you to vote YES!
