Peninsula Township (Grand Traverse County) was showcased as one of ten “Trailblazers” in farmland preservation in the Spring 2010 American Farmland, the quarterly magazine of the American Farmland Trust.
The purchase of development rights program recently celebrated its fifteenth anniversary, protecting more than 5,000 acres of prime fruit growing lands. Farmers willing to permanently protect their land and local tax payers have twice voted to raise their taxes to provide program funding.
Brian Bourdages, Farmland Protection Specialist for the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, notes that the benefits of the program include a vibrant, stable agricultural community in Peninsula Township that has served as a catalyst for other programs in Michigan. Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, a Heart of the Lakes founding member, has been instrumental in the success of the Township’s program, providing administration and technical support.
