In August, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment (MDNRE) announced the award of 14 water quality grants totaling $3.9 million that will permanently protect and restore rivers and wetlands and support watershed planning. Three Heart of the Lakes members, Legacy Land Conservancy, Land Conservancy of West Michigan, and Six Rivers Regional Land Conservancy received $1.4 million of the total awarded for projects. including conservation easement acquisition and stewardship education in the Raisin River watershed (southeast Michigan), conservation easement acquisition and a road crossing reconstruction in the White River watershed (west Michigan), and easement acquisitions in the West Branch of Stony Creek (southeast Michigan) respectively.
MDNRE Director Rebecca Humphries stated, “The implementation grants will result in the protection of several high-quality waters and help improve water quality in other watersheds.”
This latest round of grants demonstrates the importance of the land-water connection and the role land conservancies play in protecting lands that help maintain the health of Michigan’s water resources.
